There is a particular kind of comfort that lives inside a warm mug. Not the coffee you drink standing at the counter before the day begins. My family lived in England for a time, and while high tea at Harrods was beautiful, the ritual that stayed with me longest was far simpler. For a while we lived in a hotel, and every afternoon after school I'd come through the door, put the kettle on, and make myself a cup of tea. Kettle, cup, biscuit, stillness. In a season of uncertainty, that small daily ritual was the most anchoring thing in my world. These two paintings came from that memory — the teapot at the center in warm amber and ochre, unhurried in its shape, against swirling washes of cool blue and gray that suggest the world moving fast just outside the frame. You do not need grand porcelain to host a meaningful gathering. A kettle, two mugs, and the willingness to put the phones away — that has always been enough.
